  • What do you usually do during the summer? How much time do you spend relaxing? Do you do any work or study?
  • What are the typical ways of enjoying the summer holidays in Lithuania? Consider different age groups.
  • If you had an opportunity to spend a summer holiday abroad, where would you go? Why? Would you spend the time in big cities seeing the sights or visiting museums? Or would you spend the time by the sea or in the mountains? Why?

TASK 2. Role Play "A Survey on the Role of the Internet"

Your partner and you have 5 minutes to do this task.

Your friend and you take part in a school project called „The Influence of the Internet on Students' Life“. Your task is to carry out a survey among students of senior grades in order to find out what role the Internet plays in their lives.

Discuss the issues below with your partner to prepare for the survey:

  • availability of the Internet at home;
  • amount of time students use the Internet for studies;
  • amount of time students use the Internet for entertainment/fun;
  • most popular search engines;
  • most popular websites.

TASK 1. Individual Talk "Food and Eating"

  • How many meals do you usually have a day? What kind of food do you eat at each meal? What are your favourite dishes?
  • Do you consider your way of eating to be a healthy one? Why/Why not? (Consider the time of eating, the quality of products, the balance of diet etc.)
  • If a foreigner asked you to describe typical Lithuanian food, what would you say?

TASK 2. Role Play "A Clean-up Day at School"

Your partner and you have 5 minutes to do this task.

Your friend and you are members of your school's environmental club „The Environmental Enthusiasts“. You have decided to initiate a clean-up action inside and outside your school.

Discuss the issues below with your partner and make a plan for this environmental action:

  • reasons for organizing the clean-up;
  • areas of cleaning-up inside the school;
  • areas of cleaning-up outside the school;
  • tools and cleaning materials needed;
  • garbage collection and transportation to a dumpsite.

  • Some people see shopping as a way of spending their weekends and leisure time. What do you think of this view?
  • If you won a lottery, how would you use the money? Would you buy something for yourself or for other people? Would you put the money in the bank or give it to someone? (Give reasons for your choice.)

TASK 2. Role Play "Politeness Week"

A good atmosphere at school contributes to better academic results, therefore, your friend and you approve of the initiative of the Students' Council to organize a Politeness Week at school. You both are responsible for the preparation of a scenario for the Week.

Discuss the issues below with your partner and plan the activities:

  • finding out students' attitudes to politeness;
  • describing the relationship between students and teachers;
  • suggesting ways of solving conflicts between students and teachers;
  • describing an ideal polite student;
  • selecting the most polite student in each class.

Your friend and you belong to an organization called „Young Leaders“. You understand the importance of team work and good leadership. You have decided to organise a Leadership Conference to raise your peers' interest in team work and leadership issues.

Discuss the issues below with your partner and make a conference action plan:

  • participants;
  • time and place;
  • topics of discussion (effective communication, organizational/planning skills, team-building, leader characteristics, problem-solving strategies, evaluation, fund raising etc.);
  • possible key-note speakers, lecturers;
  • conference fee.

Your friend and you are members of the Students' Council. You have decided to organize an Open Day at your school to attract new students to your school. You have decided to produce an information leaflet about your school.

  • school profile (type of school, special features);
  • participation in projects (local, national, international);
  • school traditions;
  • after-class activities;
  • self-governing bodies (School Council, Students' Council, Fund Raising Committee, Sports Committee etc.)

  • Do you have any special skills required for certain jobs, such as computer literacy, driving license, foreign languages etc.?

TASK 2. Role Play "An Open-Air Concert for Parents and Sponsors"

Your partner and you have 5 minutes to do this task.

Your school has a tradition to end the school year by a concert for parents and school sponsors. Your friend and you belong to the school Music Club and have always been active in organizing this event.

Discuss the issues below with your partner in order to make suggestions to the school administration for this event:

  • advantages of outdoor concerts;
  • length of the programme;
  • stage and seating arrangements;
  • musical instruments and equipment needed;

TASK 2. Role Play "Language Situation"

Your school has a tradition to celebrate the European Day of Languages. Your English teacher has asked your friend and you to prepare a presentation on the topic of language situation in Europe and Lithuania.

Discuss the issues below with your partner in order to decide what information should be included in your presentation:

  • advantages of knowing many languages;
  • number of languages taught at secondary school;
  • conditions for learning languages at school;
  • language situation in Lithuania (state language, ethnic minority languages);
  • future of the Lithuanian language - survival or death.

TASK 1. Individual Talk "Traditional Festivals"

  • What Lithuanian traditional and/or religious festivals do you know? Which ones are your favourite ones? Why? Name at least two.
  • What do you/your family do on the festive days? Describe at least two celebrations.
  • What is the importance of traditional and/or religious festivals? Why do people enjoy them?

TASK 2. Role Play "How to Choose a Specialisation/Profile"

Your partner and you have 5 minutes to do this task.

Your partner and you are members of the School Council. One of the questions discussed at the Council each year is student specialisation after basic school. The problem is that some students find it difficult to choose a specialisation and select a suitable programme for the 11th and 12th forms. You have decided to organise a meeting with the 10th formers to help them make a decision.

Discuss the issues below with your partner and plan the meeting:

  • presenting the choices available (Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Fine Arts and Technology);
  • discussing optional and compulsory subjects;
  • giving advice on how to evaluate one's strengths and weaknesses;
  • showing a link between the specialisation and the future profession;
  • preparing a Powerpoint presentation/posters.
